Swim Sets

Check out a variety of swim sessions below that can help you either as a cross training exercise or assist you in the lead up to a triathlon or aquathon.

My background as a swimmer comes from years spent as a member of Hoylake Swimming Club. I firmly believe swimming has played an important part in my development as an international athlete, helping to give me a strong aerobic base without the stresses associated with the impact of running from a young age.

If you have children, I’d highly recommend encouraging them to swim as it’s a fantastic ‘life skill’ to have and also a great way to get a strong aerobic background as a young athlete, which in most cases you can transfer into another sport.

Swimming is still my go-to when injured and when I suffered a sacral stress fracture in 2016 I set myself a challenge of breaking 20-mins for 1500m but fell agonisingly close with a 20:06 clocking! This ensured I stayed physically fit making it easier when I did finally get back running and also more importantly channeled my inner competitiveness when cross training!

Please adapt the sessions to suit your own level and if you need to increase volume of the sessions I’d definitely include a longer warm up and warm down. Have a play round and mix the sessions up, which include a nice balance of endurance work, speed work, kick, pull and technique.
